What To Do in the First 24 Hours After Discovering Pinworms

Learning that your child has pinworms can be stressful, but taking swift measures can reduce the likelihood of the infection spreading and help ensure you don't get reinfected. Below is a brief guide on what to do in the first 24 hours.

Step 1: Check the Signs

The following are some common indicators.

  • Itching around the anus, particularly at night
  • Inability to sleep
  • Irritability

Step 2: Start Treating Yourself & Family Members

  • Reese’s Pinworm Medicine is available OTC at your local drug store, Walmart or online. Follow the dosing and instructions on the label.
  • Every member of the household should be treated.

Step 3: Wash Bed Linens and Clothing

  • Wash nightwear, undergarments, bed linen, and towels as pinworms can survive for 2-3 weeks in the home
  • Tip: Using warm water will help wash off any eggs.

Step 4: Prioritize Washing Hands

  • Ask each member in the household to:
    • Wash their hands often
    • Wash their hands after using the restroom
    • Wash their hands before eating

Step 5: Disinfecting Common Areas

  • Disinfect all bathroom areas, doorknobs, light fixture switches, and other regularly handled items including vacuuming or mopping floors.

Step 6: Daily Hygiene

  • Ensure fingernails are short and avoid biting or scratching, as this may spread pinworm eggs.
  • Shower or bath daily.

Pinworm Infections are very common and easily treated. It is important to act within the first 24 hours to prevent infection of other family members in the house and prevent reinfection.
