Prevent Pinworms at Sleep Away Summer Camp

Sending your child away for a week or two can be scary. You leave your child in the care of strangers and into the unknown. While many things can cause emergencies, Pinworms can be prevented at the source. These pesky worms invade our bodies and lives, but don’t let them get in the way of your child’s fun this year. Share our simple steps with your kids to prevent pinworm problems.

#1 Washing hands

Summer camps include many activities, from swimming to horseback riding and every sport in between. But once the games end and they go in for dinner or lunch, the dirt and grime remain on their hands. Lunchtime is the prime time for pinworms to be ingested. To solve this issue, have your child take a few extra minutes to use the restroom and wash their hands, before eating

#2 Keep their nails short

Washing hands is the best course of action, but it can be challenging to scrub under your nails every time you wash your hands. Send your child to camp with shorter nails to avoid under-nail dirt and pinworms. Pinworms only become an issue when ingested but biting your nails or eating food with unwashed hands may lead to an itchy butt.

#3 Shower properly

Showering properly may not be the most crucial thing when referring to pinworms, like washing your hands, but overall, it leads to better hygiene. At summer camp, children are usually allowed one shower a day, and we recommend that children use this time wisely. Kids are known for not wanting to shower and get lazy with washing their hair and body. Being outside most of the day can lead to bug bites and pinworm problems. Kids should scrub with soap and check their skin for unusual bugs or bites.

#4 If your child comes home with pinworm anyway

You told them to wash their hands and follow our three rules to avoid pinworm problems. But you still get the call that your child is experiencing discomfort and may have pinworms.
